Q&A

Our Q&A section is designed to be your go-to resource for all things basement finishing. From conceptualization to execution, we're here to demystify the complexities of turning your basement into a stylish and functional extension of your home. Our team of experienced professionals has curated a collection of frequently asked questions to provide you with insightful answers and valuable tips.

Q

Approximately how long will my basement renovation take?

A: On average, a basement renovation with Timberline takes approximately 6 weeks to complete from the start of construction to the point where you're ready to move into your newly finished space. We finish your basement faster than others, who can take up to three times as long. Our business model is centered on both craftsmanship and speed, with a commitment to making our customers happy.

Completing your project on time is a top priority for Timberline, as we understand the value of adhering to a planned schedule. We have a vested interest in sticking to the schedule, as going off-track is counterproductive for us. Therefore, we make every effort

to ensure that your basement renovation is completed within the planned time frame.

During your appointment in our in-house design center, we will work with you to make all of your finish selections before the start of construction. This process is designed to save you time and reduce the potential for project delays.

Additionally, during this time, we will finalize any changes to the floor plan, ensuring that it aligns with your preferences and needs.

The updated floor plan will then be submitted for construction permitting and final approval, streamlining the process and ensuring that your basement renovation proceeds according to your specifications and within the planned schedule.

Q:

How much construction noise should I expect during my basement finishing project, and can I work from home during the process?

A: Basement finishing involves a certain level of noise, especially during the early stages of the project when tasks like relocating utilities and framing are being carried out. These phases tend to generate more noise. However, as the project progresses and

moves into the finishing and interior work stages, the noise decreases and most of our clients have no problem working from home.

Understanding this can help you plan your schedule and make necessary accommodations during the noisiest phases of the project, allowing for a more manageable and less disruptive experience while working from home or carrying out other activities in your living space.

It's important to note that it's challenging for contractors to completely control noise without hindering the progress of the project, so some level of construction-related noise is inevitable. If you need a quiet environment for specific tasks, such as working

from home, you may want to make alternative arrangements during the noisier phases of the project.

Q:

Do I need to be available during the entire construction process?

A: Customer Availability: The first week is key. After that, it settles down. During the first week of the construction process, it is essential for you to be available or have the flexibility to provide input and review the progress regularly. This is when the foundational elements of your basement project will be established, and the entire project will be built upon this foundation. Your presence and involvement during this

phase are crucial to ensuring that everything aligns with your preferences and requirements, allowing us to get it right from the start.

You should be prepared for questions and decisions that may require your input during this initial phase. After the first week, the pace of the construction process typically settles down. Some of our clients even find it to be a convenient time to take a short

break away from the noise and construction, as the project enters the drywall phase.

Q:

How do you access the basement during the construction process?

A: Access to Your Home: You'll be amazed at how much we get through your basement window. Approximately 90-95% of all materials and tradespeople will utilize the basement window for entry and exit. The only exceptions are larger items like bathtubs, doors, trim and cabinets, as well as building inspectors, who will need to use the front door for access.

Rest assured, we will never enter your main living space without prior notice; we will always knock first to ensure your privacy. This means that for the most part, you can continue with your usual daily routine on the main level of your home. Whether you work

from home or have other daily activities, you should expect them to continue without significant disruption. We kindly request that you unlock the basement first thing in the morning and ensure that your home is locked up and secure in the evening to maintain the construction schedule effectively and securely.

Q:

Do I need to remove all of my belongings from the basement?

A: We strongly recommend that you remove all of your belongings from the basement work areas. The only exception to this is that some large heavy items can remain in the unfinished areas of the basement. However, the team working on your basement will need everything removed from the specific areas we'll be finishing. This includes spaces beneath the stairs, which is often overlooked.

For items that you choose to leave in the basement, it's essential to protect them from dust. The dust generated during construction will consist of fine particles making it challenging to clean. We recommend storing small personal Items in sealed plastic

totes and covering any large items with plastic. It's advisable not to leave electronic components or valuable items in the basement, as even when covered, they may still accumulate dust. Please be aware that we cannot accept responsibility for items left in the basement during the construction process.

Q:

Why should I hire professionals to finish my basement?

A: Safety: Construction sites pose various safety risks, and working in a basement can present specific challenges. Professionals have the knowledge, safety equipment, and experience to ensure that the work is carried out safely. For example, tasks like hanging drywall or electrical work require proper handling and precautions to prevent accidents.

● Compliance with Building Codes: Building codes have evolved over thousands of years, and modern codes are in place to minimize the risk of hazards such as fire, electrocution, sewer backups, gas leaks, and other dangerous conditions. Professionals are well-versed in these codes and ensure that your basement project complies with all relevant regulations.

● Cost Efficiency: While you might think that DIY basement finishing can save you money, there are potential pitfalls. Mistakes during a DIY project can be costly to rectify, often exceeding the cost of hiring professionals from the start. Contractors typically have established relationships with materials suppliers, which can lead to cost savings due to bulk purchasing. Additionally, they already possess the necessary tools, whereas a DIY project might require a significant investment in tools and equipment.

● Experience: Perhaps the most significant benefit of hiring a professional contractor is their experience. They have a track record of successfully completing basement remodeling projects. Their expertise can help you make informed decisions, avoid common pitfalls, and ensure that your basement is finished to the highest quality standards.

● Efficiency: Professionals can complete the project efficiently and within a reasonable timeframe, saving you the hassle and stress of a prolonged DIY project. Their experience and skills allow for a smoother, more streamlined process.

● Warranty and Guarantee: Many professional contractors offer warranties or guarantees for their work. This means that if any issues arise after the project is completed, they will address and rectify them, giving you peace of mind.

In summary, hiring the professionals at Timberline for your basement remodeling project not only ensures safety, compliance with codes, and cost-efficiency but also brings valuable experience and expertise to the table, resulting in a successful and stress-free renovation.
